One of the greatest college bands of the 90s, Kristin Hersh formed Throwing Muses with high school friends and quickly became cult favourites on both sides of the Atlantic.
“As intense as ever.” The Guardian
“A stunning return to form.” Pitchfork
Now signed to Fire, the band, currently consists of Kristin, David Narcizo and Bernard Georges, pioneered a new alternative sound, releasing a string of critically celebrated albums and touring the world.
“Three shy friends from a little island, freaking the f*** out!” is how Hersh describes her band. “We play because we’re addicted to the noise and because we love each other.”
Signed to Sire in the US circa 1992, their arresting masterpiece ‘University’ saw the band hitting US and UK charts. But, after signing to a major label, Hersh realized she wasn’t interested in entertaining the greed of the corporate recording industry, so she traded her first solo album, the widely acclaimed ‘Hips and Makers’, for her band’s freedom.
“I felt morally obligated to no longer participate in an industry without substance. We need real women, we need real music,” says Hersh.
Released from her contractual obligations, Hersh was free to indulge her musical passions, her solo career along with the inventive, no-holds-barred, noise rock trio 50 Foot Wave, who pioneered the pay what you want model and continues her unique brand of independence, fostering close relationships with listeners and touring across the globe with all her projects.
Throwing Muses released ‘Sun Racket’ in 2020, a heady set filled with tough and tender tales spiked with surreal imagery. That was followed by a re-issue of 2013’s excellent ‘Purgatory/Paradise’.
“An essential truth kit for a post-truth world.” The Wire
“Sublime riffs and hair-standing-on-end vocals giving you a jolt. Throwing Muses has maintained the inimitable ethos that has distinguished their music for decades.” Pop Matters
Four years on from ‘Sun Racket’, Throwing Muses released their first new music in November 2024. Written and produced by Kristin Hersh at Steve Rizzo’s Stable Sound Studio in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, ‘Drugstore Drastic’ tells of a kerbside soliloquy caught en route to a more alluring rendezvous. Built on a brisk acoustic strum with a guitar sub-melody underpinning proceedings, it’s an unfolding tale of social awareness from a blurred sub-conscious.
“Don’t think you should drive… but you’re walking OK.”
Kristin: “The bulk of this song comes from a New Orleans sidewalk: an overheard conversation between a sober and a not sober person, as we all made our way toward The Cool Tree, an uptown meeting point with a shifting cast of characters, exotic birds and weird, twisting, tendril-like branches that reach out along the ground.”
A paradise just beyond our bedraggled fellow travellers. Throwing Muses are heading back to basics.
