Biography
Alongside her performance and writing work for post punk trio Bas Jan and Jarvis Cocker’s Jarv Is (2016-2022) Serafina Steer has been gaining momentum as a composer for tv, theatre and film. Most recently co-composing (with Cocker) This Is Going to Hurt directed by Lucy Forbes for BBC/Sister Productions.
Her classical training and professional experience as a multi-instrumentalist working in alternative pop and contemporary music worlds, has resulted in Steer’s music being unclassifiable, arising from a juxtaposition of styles whilst retaining a songwriter’s clarity of purpose. Serafina’s soundtrack work has been played on BBC 6 Music by Iggy Pop [Shruthi] whilst the electro-acoustic instrumental tracks on her most recent self-produced solo album ‘The Mind Is A Trap’ caused her to be described in Q Magazine as ‘hand-painted, individually numbered kind of songwriting talent’.
As a composer she has been supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation (composer award 2017), PRSF Women Make Music Fund (live soundtrack commission performed at Brancage International Film Festival, Glasgow Short Film Festival, London Short Film Festival), Brighter Sound/ Manchester International Woman’s Festival, Arts Council England.
