The third single from Thala’s this year, ‘tongue-tied & starry-eyed’ is a timeless homage to the ups and downs of mercurial partnerships as captured in Harry Strange’s video for the track, featuring Thala’s museful verses, set-off by the bittersweet harmonies of the mysterious Sfven.
“I sat down with Sfven and we talked about friendship and how people come and go out of our lives and it’s supposed to be that way. Everything sorts itself out and sometimes it’s important to move on and to let go of the ones that don’t do us good anymore.”
A long way from the “sweet indie rock” of last year’s critically-acclaimed EPs, ‘tongue-tied & starry-eyed’ is an uplifting paean to the staying power of long term, never faltering friendship – the kind of relationship that is resumed with easy wonderment.
A transient soul, originally drawn to the cerebral emotion of shimmering early 90s shoegaze, she traversed the indie rock wasteland and has created a widescreen cinematic sound; off-kilter pop music that blossoms; think Soccer Mommy with King Krule on chorus duties; an emotional union set to pluck the heartstrings, with a harmony rush that makes the perfect happy ever after ending.
