Following the release of Bas Jan’s sensational art-rock opus this year, the unpredictable off-kilter four-piece are the latest act to join the ever-expanding Fire roster. Bas Jan is the vehicle for well-established musicians Serafina Steer (Jarv IS…), Emma Smith (Jarv IS…, Meilyr Jones, Seamus Fogarty, Elysian Quartet) and Charlie Stock (The Irrepressibles) and percussionist, Rachel Horwood (Trash Kit, Bamboo).
The newly expanded, London-based ensemble released their second album Baby U Know in early 2022 on Lost Map Records to critical acclaim; combining “internal monologues, workings-out of philosophical positions, political despair and myth making. It demands & deserves undivided attention” MOJO
Named after Dutch conceptual artist Ban Jan Ader, their deadpan, satirical, post-punk sound reawakens the spirit of The Slits and The Raincoats.
Initially conceived as songs for Serafina’s solo material, their 2018 debut Yes I Jan (Lost Map) chronicles the collaborative beginnings of the group, shaping their unconventional sound. There’s an astute hidden humour and beauty in the way they capture the mundanity of the everyday.
Now signed to Fire Records, Bas Jan will be journeying west across four dates as part of Weird Walk’s ‘Ley Line’ festivities. An enchanting quest for myth, magic, music and merriment, ‘Ley Line‘ features live performances from Pictish Trail, Bas Jan, a specially created Weird Walk video mixtape & a DJ set from Guto Pryce (Super Furry Animals) beginning in Exeter from 28th September.
